A short while ago, when I posted the first part of Dinner Party for 6, [livejournal.com profile] gin_tonic was incautious enough to express an interest in reading the backstory to Draco and Neville's relationship.

Peace

Draco strode swiftly into the Magical Greenhouse, eyes stinging. It wasn’t fair - he’d come to Kew for a bit of peace – and whom did he see but that bloody Gryffindor hero, Longbottom.

Draco couldn’t face meeting him – after the derision with which he had treated the boy during their schooldays, Neville would undoubtedly be looking for payback – and Draco really wasn’t feeling up to defending the indefensible today.

Suddenly, there came a scream from one of the other visitors. Draco drew his wand – only to drop it as he felt himself seized by a massive pair of green jaws…

Lunch

Draco realised to his horror that he had strayed too near the vegetation - and was now about to provide lunch for a Venus Mantrap.

So this was it, was it? A fitting end for the last scion of a proud family – chewed up by a bloody pot plant. He supposed it would at least partially appease the many who thought every last Malfoy should have been immured forever in Azkaban. Draco closed his eyes despairingly. He could already feel his skin beginning to blister painfully as the plant’s foul digestive acids ate away at his clothes.

It hurt. Draco screamed.

Crush

Neville was torn. He was sure he’d seen Draco Malfoy hurrying into one of the greenhouses, and he didn’t know whether he should follow him or not. He’d had a crush on the pale, delicate boy since, well, forever, and had had fantasies that one day they’d bump into each other, get talking and –

Neville sighed. It was pointless. He’d never know what to say to Malfoy anyway. He never did know what to say to people he liked. And he was quite aware the elegant Slytherin viewed him as a total waste of space.

Suddenly, he heard a cry…
