24insanehours Prompt: Two men are caught in a thunderstorm. Unexpected things happen. Romance/happy end. Submitted by
animagiste
Characters: Remus Lupin/Draco Malfoy
AN: I’m not sure this really qualifies as unexpected things happening. Maybe to the characters… *g*
Strolling through the manor grounds this muggy afternoon, Draco mused that it really had been a good idea of his to invite Remus Lupin and his motherless child to come and stay for the summer. The baby, of whom Draco was, much to his own surprise, becoming rather fond, was doing a wonderful job of distracting Mother from fretting over Father, locked up in Azkaban – she was busy cooing over it back at the Manor even now – and as a PR exercise, it could hardly be bettered: encompassing as it did generosity to a bereaved war hero and an orphan (well, almost) in one fell swoop.
And Remus himself was proving unexpectedly good company, for an older man and a werewolf. Now he no longer had to preserve the po-faced façade of a teacher, he was a wellspring of amusing stories from his time as a Hogwarts student and the years thereafter. Due to his, ahem, affliction the poor man had been hard pressed to find employment after leaving school, and had taken a whole string of unlikely jobs.
Draco was a little surprised to find himself reflecting that, funny though the stories of various menial and/or degrading positions might be to hear now, they possibly hadn’t been all that amusing to live through.
Perhaps, if he managed to rehabilitate the Malfoy name enough, he might be able to push for reform of those ridiculously outdated werewolf laws?
Remus’ voice broke into his musings. “I think we might have to take cover, Draco. I have a feeling it’s going to tip down any minute.”
Draco looked at the sky. “Are you sure? It doesn’t look any darker than half an hour ago.”
Remus grinned. “Trust me. Werewolf instincts.”
“Well, in that case, I suppose we’d better head for the folly. This way.”
As they reached the gothic stone tower, lightning flashed, accompanied by an almost simultaneous crack of thunder, and fat splodgey drops of rain began to fall.
Draco smiled ruefully. “Feel free to say I told you so. Come on, up the stairs. There’s a room at the top where we can sit down and wait for it to pass.” Draco led the way up the spiral staircase.
“Well, this is actually quite pleasant,” Remus remarked, taking in the small chamber furnished with stone seats, the windows giving a rather spectacular view of the gardens. “Although of course, if your father hadn’t been so paranoid as to set anti-apparition wards to cover the whole grounds, we could have been back at the Manor by now.”
“Oh, that wasn’t paranoia, he just wanted to make sure Mother got plenty of exercise. Apparently she put on quite a bit of weight after I was born.” Draco shuddered.
“Narcissa? Fat? Good heavens, I can hardly imagine it!”
Draco smirked. “Haven’t you ever wondered why there are no pictures of her with me when I was a baby?”
The booming thunder seemed to get louder with every clap. Forked lightning was intermittently visible through the windows, appearing almost close enough to touch. Remus started to pace, nervously.
“Don’t worry, there’s a lightning conductor fitted, we shouldn’t be in any danger from a strike,” Draco reassured him.
Remus stopped, and turned to him. “Oh. Oh, it’s not that. It’s just, Moony tends to get a bit restless when there’s a storm. Primal instincts, I suppose. Makes me want to – well, never mind.”
“Makes you want to what?” Draco was curious.
Remus seemed reluctant to explain. “Well, hunt something. Or something like that.”
“You’re hungry? Because I could have a house-elf bring us something- “
“No! No, it’s not – look, don’t worry, I can keep Moony on the leash, as it were. I’ll be fine.” He started pacing again.
Concerned, Draco walked up to him. “You’re sure there’s nothing I can do to help?” he asked, laying his hand on Remus’ arm.
Remus whirled, and grabbed Draco’s shoulder hard. His eyes seemed to blaze as he struggled for words, whilst, startled, Draco simply stood there. “I – no. You should…” He broke off, breathing harshly. “You probably shouldn’t touch me while I’m like this. Sorry.” Letting go of Draco’s shoulder, he flung himself to the other side of the room, clearly embarrassed.
Draco was stunned. The thin summer trousers Remus was wearing had been totally inadequate to the task of hiding his arousal as they had clung to each other.
The wolf didn’t want to hunt something to eat. The instinct had been a little more primal than that. Draco shivered. Moony had wanted to take him, right here. Right now.
Merlin, that thought was making him hard.
Draco came to a sudden decision. “Remus?” He stopped, correcting himself. “Moony? I know you said I shouldn’t touch you, but you know what? You’re not my teacher any more.” Stepping forward, he placed his arms around Remus’ waist, and was rewarded with a shudder from the older man. “But if you like,” he breathed into Remus’ ear, “I’ll still do what you say.”
With a howl that was definitely more wolf than man, Remus spun, and crushed Draco against the stone wall as the storm raged on around them.
……………………………………………….
Some time later, when the sun had come out to fill the gardens with colour almost painful in its intensity, Narcissa laid the sleeping Teddy gently in his cradle. She hoped the boys hadn’t got too wet in the rain. Perhaps she should send a house-elf – no. There they were.
She smiled, with just a hint of wistfulness, to see them walking contentedly back to the Manor, hand in hand.
