The more I write, the less I understand people who say things like they spent a year thinking about a novel, and then they just had to write it down. One of the biggest problems I have with longer stories (anything over 15k) is keeping it all in my (apparently rather disappointingly-sized) brain at once. Still haven't come up with a satisfactory solution to this.

Yes, I've had stories that seemed to write themselves, but they were very particular about waiting for me to sit down at the keyboard before they started, and I couldn't have told you beforehand very much at all about how they would go.

Have started writing the end of Camwolf, which has been very useful in letting me know what has to happen in the middle.

I'm glad it's not just me who starts to write with only the vaguest idea of what's going to happen.

*g* You know, I actually made the effort with this one to put down a sort of plot synopsis (although very brief) right at the start - and then I looked at it and thought, well that's never going to work and have been ignoring it ever since!
