Dear Mother,
Thank you for your letter and the feverfew. Sprout simply does not have your touch with herbs. Loathe as I am to speak well of the boy, I find myself positively looking forward to the day Longbottom takes over the greenhouses altogether.
I trust you are still enjoying your retirement? The library is a different place without you. Filch sends his regards; I wonder whether it was wise of you to encourage him.
And yes, of course I shall be home for the holidays. Why ever should you imagine that I would not be?
Your affectionate son
Severus
….
Dear Mother,
Ah, I see. Really, Mother, I should have hoped that at your age you would have learned to pay no heed to the idle rumour-mongers of the popular press. I can categorically state that there is a purely professional relationship between myself and Hogwarts’ latest Defence Against the Dark Arts professor, nothing more. Surely you, of all people, can see this preposterous tale for the absurdity it is? The mere fact that Potter and I occasionally engage in civil conversation is hardly grounds to postulate an affair.
I shall see you in a fortnight.
Your affectionate son
Severus
…
Dear Mother,
Where on earth do you hear this nonsense? I have not discouraged Potter’s suit; what in Merlin’s name makes you think he has designs upon me? A cessation of mutual dislike is no reason to suppose any warmer feelings I might (and I do not say I do) have for the boy may be returned.
I enclose a parcel from Filch; I shudder to think what it may contain. Really, Mother, it is time you were firm with the man. Better to let him down now rather than allow his futile hopes to rise.
Your affectionate son
Severus
…
Dear Eileen,
Severus won’t be coming home for the holidays. I’m afraid his presence will be required at Hogwarts and later, in St Lucia. I’ll get him into a bathing costume if it kills me. Thanks for the tips, by the way. They were very helpful. I’d never have guessed he was a Gilbert and Sullivan fan, or that he liked Liquorice Allsorts.
I hope you and Mr Filch have a nice time at Spinner’s End. Minerva says she’ll take good care of Mrs Norris.
We’ll send you a postcard when we get to the Caribbean.
Lots of love
Harry
